Business Etiquette

Email Handle

Your business email should use your first name and last name. Some variation of it is fine. Use gmail or outlook. School emails are also fine.

Good examples of email handles:

  • john.doe@gmail.com
  • sarah.smith.tech@gmail.com
  • the.john.smith@uwaterloo.com

Email Format

Keep your emails concise—aim for readability within a mere 4 seconds. Maintain a casual tone, ensure impeccable grammar and spelling, and refrain from using indents. Quickly convey your message without unnecessary elaboration.

Subject: Google SWE Intern Looking to Join Netflix
to: amy@netflix.com
from: sarah.lin@gmail.com

Hey Amy,

I'm a former Google SWE Intern and I'm keen to explore a role at Netflix as a new grad.

During my Google internship, I specialized in backend development and distributed systems.
One of my notable achievements was optimizing Google Maps' loading time by 11%.

I believe I am a strong candidate for Netflix. Is it possible for me to apply for a new grad role?

Best,
Sarah

Meeting Punctuality

Arrive on time for meetings, whether in-person or virtual. If you're unable to attend, notify the organizer in advance and reschedule if needed.

Attire

A casual T-shirt will probably work fine as attire assuming it's a tech company. If not, then you should investigate.
