XYZ Method
Improve the impact of your resume bullet points using the XYZ method.
General Rules For Bullet Points
- Aim for 3 - 5 bullet points per experience/project/extracurricular. Use 2 for less critical sections.
- Reflect deeply; consider stretching the truth if needed, but be ready for interview questions.
- Use bold for emphasis. Abbreviate if recruiters understand.
- Metrics matter; e.g.,
Reduced AWS cost by 20%
is powerful.
What XYZ Means
The XYZ method structures bullet points:
Accomplished [X] as measured by [Y], by doing [Z].
Avoid using only X, XY, XZ, or Z. Full XYZ is most impactful.
Quantitative > Qualitative for [Z]. Numbers > Subjectivity. Make embellishments believable.
Example
Implemented a Redis-based caching mechanism, leading to a 20% reduction in AWS cluster costs and significantly enhancing developer productivity through efficient resource utilization.
Not Sure What to Write?
Use generative AI for inspiration, get imaginative with details, or stretch the truth. However, ensure you think deeply into past conversations, scenarios, and noteworthy contributions from your teammates.
